Baseball Loses First Game To William & Mary, 11-4, Second Game Suspended In 8th Inning
WILLIAMSBURG, Virg. - The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to the College of William & Mary in a non-conference game played in Williamsburg, Va. The game was actually the first of a doubleheader, with Quinnipiac losing the first game, 11-4, before the second game was suspended in the eighth inning due to heavy rain. William & Mary leads that game, 9-3. The loss drops Quinnipiac to 0-7 on the season while the Tribe improves to 7-5 on the season. Senior Brian Monack (Branford, Conn.) and Ben Farina (Waterford, Conn.) both posted solid days at the plate, with Farina spraying five hits to Monack's four in the twin bill. Play is scheduled to resume on Saturday, March 13 with the remainder of the second game, followed immediately by the third game of the series.
In the first game, an 11-4 loss to the Tribe, Monack was 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Farina was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior Ryan Ullrich (Woodbridge, Conn.) had a pair of hits, with one run scored. Jeff Carino (Greenwich, Conn.) also collected two hits in the loss.
William & Mary pounced on Quinnipiac starting pitcher Mike Oskandy (Bethel, Conn.), putting across seven runs in the first inning. Over 4 2/3 innings pitched, Oskandy was tagged for 10 runs - eight earned - on seven hits while walking six. Derek Lamacchia (Whitestone, N.Y.) held William & Mary to one run on three hits over the final 3 1/3 innings pitched.
In the third inning, Quinnipiac scored their first run when Farina hit a one-out double to center field, He would score on a single to right field by Monack. In the fourth inning, Mickey Amanti (Waterford, Conn.) singled with one out. After Carino singled to left, and Amanti advanced to third, Kyle Nisson's (Wallingford, Conn.) groud ball to short scored Amanti with the Bobcats' first run of the day. In the 5th, Ullrich walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a single by Farina. Monack's line drive to center scored Ullrich to cut the W&M lead to five runs, 7-3. In the 8th, freshman Alex Soucy walked with two outs and moved to second on a single by Ullrich. Farina's single up the middle scored Soucy to pull Quinnipiac to 11-4.
In the second game, Quinnipiac scored three times over the first two innings to jump out to a 3-0 lead. In the first inning, Farina singled to short and then moved to second on a passed ball. After Monack walked to put runners on first and second, Gabe Guerino (Milford, Conn.) doubled down the left field line to score Farina and give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, Carino and Kevin Spano both singled to lead off the inning before Mike Bartlett drew a walk to load the bases. After Ullrich ground into a double play, Monack singled to second base driving home Spano and Bartlett, with the latters run crossing as a result of an error.
It was all William & Mary from there, as they scored a run in the third inning, two runs in the fourth and then another run in the sixth. A four-run seventh inning gave the Tribe an 8-3 lead. Quinnipiac's Todd DeFrancesco (North Haven, Conn.) had one of the better outings of any Quinnipiac starter this season. DeFrancesco scatter four runs, three earned, on four hits over six innings pitched. Anthony Cinelli (Wall, N.J.) allowed four runs, on five hits in one inning pitched.
At the plate, Farina was 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Guerino slapped two hits in the game. Monack and Guerino drove in two of Quinnipiac's runs.
The Bobcats close-out their three-game series against William & Mary on Saturday, March 13 at 2 p.m. They return to action when they travel down the Merritt Parkway to take on Fairfield on Thursday, March 18 at 3 p.m.
