Quinnipiac University senior Mike Atkinson (Sparta, N.J.) was been as the Joe Tomasello Award recipient for the 2009-10 season. Presented annually by the New England Hockey Writers Association, the award goes to the Unsung Hero in New England.
"I am very proud of Mike and his accomplishments at Quinnipiac University," head coach Rand Pecknold said. "He worked hard on the ice, in the weight room and in the classroom to improve himself. It's nice to see him recognized with this award for all that hard work."
In his final season at Quinnipiac, Atkinson totaled career highs in goals (9) and points (17) as he also added eight assists. Atkinson's first goal of the year came against Ohio State on Oct. 9 as the Bobcats rolled to a 3-1 win over the nationally-ranked Buckeyes. He followed that performance with a pair of assists against Robert Morris in a 5-0 win on Oct. 30. Atkinson had a career-night against Clarkson on Nov. 6 with his first career hat trick. Atkinson scored twice on the penalty kill as he took an early lead nationally in short-handed goals.
Atkinson also had a goal in the Bobcats' 3-2 win against nationally-ranked Cornell on the Big Red's home ice on Nov. 21 and a goal and an assist against nationally-ranked Massachusetts in a 5-4 overtime win at the TD Bank Sports Center. He also added a career-best three assists against Brown on Feb. 26 in an 8-3 win.
For his career, Atkinson played in 135 games, totaling 22 goals and 30 assists for 55 points.
