The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team hosts Brown in the third and decisive game of the ECAC Hockey Tournament First Round Series on Sunday, March 4 at 7 p.m. at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. Brown took the first game of the series, 4-1, on Friday, March 2 before Quinnipiac evened the best-of-three series on Saturday, March 3 with a 3-0 shutout. The winner of tonight's game will advance to the ECAC Hockey Tournament Quarterfinals next weekend.
Eric Hartzell (White Bear Lake, Minn.) stone-walled the Bears on Saturday night, turning away all 16 shots he saw in goal. To date, Hartzell has the last two ECAC Hockey Tournament shutouts, and three of the last four dating back to a pair of 4-0 shutouts against Brown in the 2011 First Round and a 1-0 shutout against Cornell in the Quarterfinals.
Freshman phenom Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) has been red-hot for the Bobcats, attaching his name to Quinnipiac's last 10 goals dating back to a 4-1 win against Brown on Friday, Feb. 24. Peca assisted on all six goals that weekend, and had an assist on the first three goals of the ECAC Hockey First Round Series against Brown before scoring his first career post-season goal in a 3-0 win on Saturday.
Linemates Connor and Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) have been equally impressive over the Bobcats last four games. Connor has tallied three goals and three assists while Kellen has registered two goals and six assists in the span. For the season, Connor leads the Bobcats in assists (27) and points (37) while Kellen sits in third place with 12 goals and 21 assists for 33 points. Peca's 8-goal, 26-assist first year gives Quinnipiac its first trio of 20-assist and 30-point players since Brandon Wong (19-22--41), Eric Lampe (13-24--37) and Jean-Marc Beaudoin (14-20--34) reached both marks during the 2009-10 season.
