ALBANY, N.Y. – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey freshman Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) has been named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week for the third time this season, announced on Tuesday, March 6 by the league office. Peca led the Bobcats to a two-goal triumph over Brown on Sunday night, granting QU a trip to the ECAC Tournament Quarterfinals this coming weekend.
Playing his first career postseason series, the freshman forward led the Bobcats with five points on the strength of four assists and his first postseason goal. In the process, he became the first QU rookie to lead the Bobcats in total-points for a postseason series in the program's Division I history. An ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Year finalist, all of Peca's points came on the first five goals that Quinnipiac scored in the series, running his point-streak on consecutive goals to 11, dating back to a six-point weekend against Brown and Yale on Feb. 24-25. For the season, Peca's eight goals and 27 assists rank him second on the team in scoring.
Peca is just the fourth player in program history to reach 30 points in his first season and the fifth to reach 20 assists. Peca more than doubled the Quinnipiac record for points on consecutive goals, as the previous mark was five by former All American Reid Cashman in 2004-05. The first year Bobcat ranks fourth in NCAA Division I ice hockey in points per game for rookies (0.97). A draft pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2011, Peca currently sits at eight goals and a team-leading 27 assists for 35 points in his freshman campaign.
Quinnipiac returns to the ice on Friday night with the first game of a best-of-three series with Colgate. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. in Hamilton, N.Y. For all the latest news, scores and highlights pertaining to the men's ice hockey program, please visit www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
