The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team will face Colgate in the deciding Game 3 of its ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal series on Sunday, Mar. 12, 2012 at 7 p.m. at Starr Rink in Hamilton, N.Y. Colgate took the first game of the series, 4-2, before Quinnipiac bounced back in the second game of the best-of-three series with a 4-2 win.
Quinnipiac's win on Saturday night was its 20th of the season, giving the Bobcats its 11th 20-win season in 14 years at the Division I level. In addition, the Bobcats improved to 4-1 all-time in the second game of a postseason series in which they trail 0-1.
Four different skaters found their way onto the final box score as Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia), Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia), Jeremy Langlois (Tempe, Ariz.) and Scott Zurevinski (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) all scored for the Bobcats. Connor Jones also had an assist, while freshman phenom Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) assisted on Quinnipiac's first three goals.
Jones' goal was also his team-leading fourth of the ECAC Hockey tournament, giving him 13 goals and 28 assists for a team-best 41 points. He's the first player to reach the 40-point mark since since Brandon Wong (19-22-41) did it in 2009-10. Peca sits at 39 points (8-31) while Kellen Jones has 36 points (14-22), to date.
Peca is having a historically great postseason. With his three assists against Colgate in Game 2, Peca now has a team-leading nine points in the 2011-12 ECAC Hockey tournament, tying Ben Nelson for the most in a single postseason in Quinnipiac's Division I history. Nelson, also Quinnipiac's career postseason point leader with 14 points, accomplished the feat in the 2006-07 ECAC Hockey Tournament.
Peca's eight assists in the Bobcats' six postseason games this year are the most in a single ECAC Hockey Tournament in Quinnipiac's history. In addition, Peca's nine points also tie the ECAC Hockey freshman postseason point record, previous reached by Dartmouth's Lee Stempniak (4 goals, 5 assists) in 2003. His eight assists are the most for a freshman in tournament history.
