TAMPA BAY, Fla. – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey freshman stand-out Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) was recently featured on the official website of the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lighting, lightning.nhl.com, in the website's weekly "Prospect Report".
The article, by Mark Pukalo which also features commentary from Bobcats' head coach Rand Pecknold, discusses Peca's break-out freshmen campaign at Quinnipiac. Peca passed-out a team-high 39 assists while also scoring eight goals for the Bobcats. In addition, Peca ranked among the nation's leading scorers in the postseason in addition to one of the top scoring rookies in NCAA Division I hockey. Peca also saw impressive streaks that included points in 11-straight games, and also on 11 consecutive goals, a new Quinnipiac record. Peca was a 2011-12 ECAC Hockey All-Rookie selection and was named the program's Rookie of the Year.
Peca was a seventh round draft pick of the Lightning in 2010 after being heavily recruited by several Canadian major junior teams. Peca finished his junior career with the Pembroke Lumber Kings of the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) where he tallied 72 points in 50 games while leading the Lumber Kings to the CCHL title and Royal Bank Cup finals.
