Quinnipiac Men's Ice Hockey Head Coach Rand Pecknold Announced As Finalist For ECAC Hockey's Tim Taylor Award
ALBANY, N.Y. – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey head coach Rand Pecknold has been announced as one of three finalists for ECAC Hockey's 2013 Tim Taylor Award, given to the league's Coach of the Year, as voted on by the league's head coaches. The winner of the Tim Taylor Award will be announced as part of ECAC Hockey's championship weekend on Thurs., Mar. 21 at the league's postseason banquet.
Pecknold's top-ranked Bobcats completed the regular season with an overall record of 24-5-5 overall record, including a 17-2-3 ledger in league play. Quinnipiac won the Cleary Cup, for the ECAC Hockey Regular-Season Championship, for the first time since joining the league for the 2005-06 season. The Bobcats rank first nationally in goals-against average (1.59) and penalty kill (91.7) while also posting the top winning percentage in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey (.779).
This season will mark the 15th year in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey for Quinnipiac, all under the leadership of Pecknold. The Bobcats have yet to post a losing season in the last 17 yearsl. In addition, the Bobcats' 2012-13 season will mark the 12th time in Pecknold's 19-year career in which Quinnipiac has posted 20 wins, which have all come at the Division I level. This year, Quinnipiac swept a program-best seven teams while also posting an 11-0-0 record against ranked opponents as well as an 11-1-2 record on the road.
Pecknold boasts a career record of 361-235-66 (.595), good for ninth among all active NCAA Division I coaches. Pecknold was previously honored as the Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year in 2005 and is a two-time Spencer Penrose National Coach of the Year finalist (2002, 2005). Yale head coach Keith Allain and RPI head coach Seth Appert are the other two finalists for ECAC Hockey's top-coaching honor.
Quinnipiac, the top-seed in the ECAC Hockey Championship tournament, will host ninth-seed Cornell for the tournament quarterfinals on Mar. 15-17. Under Pecknold's leadership, Quinnipiac is the only team to win an ECAC Hockey Tournament series in each of the last six years. The best-of-three series is set for a 7 p.m. start on Friday, Mar. 15 and Saturday, Mar. 16. If Game 3 on Mar. 17 is necessary, that game will start at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night's game can also be seen live on New England Sports Network (NESN).
