Pecknold Accepts Coach of the Year Award At New England Hockey Writers Association Banquet
Quinnipiac men's ice hockey head coach Rand Pecknold received the Clark Hodder Coach of the Year Award at the New England Hockey Writers Association annual banquet at Prince Restaurant in Saugus, Mass. on Tuesday, Apr. 16.
Pecknold was honored by the New England Hockey Writers after guiding the Bobcats to the greatest season in program history. This past year, Quinnipiac advanced to its first-ever NCAA Frozen Four and NCAA Championship Game after reaching all-time highs in just its 15th year at the NCAA Division I level. The Bobcats set program records for wins (30) while its all-time best unbeaten streak of 21 games was also the longest run in college hockey this season.
Also in attendance at the annual event, Pecknold was joined by Boston College's Jerry York, Boston University's Jack Parker, New Hampshire's Dick Umile, UMass-Lowell's Norm Bazin, Harvard's Ted Donato as well as ECAC Hockey Commissioner Steve Hagwell and Hockey East Commissioner JoeBertagna.
Pecknold's Bobcats captured the 2013 Cleary Cup for the ECAC Hockey Regular-Season Championship after posting a 17-2-3 in league play. In doing so, Quinnipiac became the first team in ECAC Hockey history to win the league by double-digit points. Pecknold was honored with the ECAC Hockey Tim Taylor Coach of the Year Award and was also a finalist for the prestigious Spencer Penrose National Coach of the Year Award.
The Bobcats ranked first nationally in goals-against average (1.67) and penalty kill (91.1) while also posting the top winning percentage in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey (.756).
Pecknold completed his 19th year as the Bobcats' head coach in 2012-13 and carries a 367-238-66 career record, good for the sixth most wins among active NCAA Division I coaches.
Pecknold was previously honored as the Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year in 2005 and is a two-time Spencer Penrose National Coach of the Year finalist (2002, 2005).
This season will mark the 15th year in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey for Quinnipiac, all under the leadership of Pecknold. The Bobcats have yet to post a losing season in the last 17 years. In addition, the Bobcats' 2012-13 season will mark the 12th time in Pecknold's 19-year career in which Quinnipiac has posted 20 wins, which have all come at the Division I level.
