HAMDEN, Conn. - Nationally-ranked No. 5 Quinnipiac defeated UMass, 6-1, in a non-conference match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 13-2-2 overall while UMass drops to 3-10-2 overall.
Quinnipaic shook-off an early UMass goal from Michael Pereira to score six unanswered goals, with three coming on the power play. Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) led all Bobcats with a goal and two assists while Zach Tolkinen (Lino Lakes, Minn.) set-up Quinnipiac's first three goals for a career-best three-assist night. Sam Anas (Potomac, Md.) and Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) had a goal and an assist each while Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia), Bryce Van Brabant (Morinville, Alberta) and Brayden Sherbinin (Kelowna, British Columbia) also scored in the Bobcats win.
Pereira's fourth goal of the year came less than four minutes into the game with assists to Branden Gracel and Conor Sheary. Less than two minutes later, Tolkinen picked up his first assist of the night when he fed Anas at center ice who then lifted the puck over a UMass defender to Kellen Jones. Kellen skated in an roofed the puck over the short-side shoulder of UMass starting goalie Steve Mastalerz.
With just under three minutes to play in the period, Quinnipiac scored the first of three-straight power play goals. Tolkinen fed Jordan Samuels-Thomas (West Hartford, Conn.) from the point to the left flank. Samuels-Thomas collected the puck in the face-off circle and fired a shot on goal where Van Brabant was camped for the tip-in to give Quinnipiac a 2-1.
In the second period, Quinnipiac scored twice on the same power play after Mastalerz was whistled for a 5-minute major for spearing. St. Denis scored with assists to Tolkinen and Dan Federico (Acton, Mass.) before Anas scored his team-leading 12th of the season with assists to Kellen Jones and Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario).
Connor Jones scored midway through the third period, also on the power play, before freshman Sherbinin scored his second goal of the year with assists going to linemates Tim Clifton (Matawan, N.J.) and senior Brooks Robinson (Duncan, British Columbia).
Quinnipiac jumps back into its ECAC Hockey schedule with games at Union on Dec. 6 and Rensselaer on Dec. 7. The Bobcats then enjoy a break before facing UMass on Dec. 29 at the UConn Hockey Classic.
