Nationally-ranked No. 5 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey goalie Michael Garteig (Prince George, British Columbia) was honored with his fifth ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Week award of the 2013-14 season, as announced by the league.
Garteig's five weekly honors are the most for a Quinnipiac player in a single season since Quinnipiac joined ECAC Hockey for the 2005-06 season. Garteig also grabbed the ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Month awards for October and November. This season, Sam Anas (Potomac, Md.) has been honored with three Rookie of the Week awards while twins Connor and Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) have each won the Player of the Week award.
Former Quinnipiac goalie Dan Clarke was a four-time recipient in 2009-10 while 2013 ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Year, Player of the Year and First Team All-American, as well as Hobey Hat Trick Finalist, Eric Hartzell won four awards in 2012-13 and five for his career.
Garteig was the only ECAC Hockey goalie to play in three games last week and was 2-0-1 with a 1.66 GAA and a .926 save percentage in 181:14 in goal. Garteig stopped 20 of 22 against Harvard in a 2-2 tie on Tuesday, Jan. 6 in Cambridge, Mass. Against No. 5/4 Union on Friday, Jan. 10, Garteig turned back 27 of the Dutchmen's 28 shots on goal in a 2-1 win. The following night against RPI, Garteig stopped 16 of 18 while denying ECAC Hockey leading goal scorer Ryan Haggerty on a pair of breakaways.
For the year, Garteig leads NCAA Division I ice hockey in GAA (1.74), wins (17), ties (5) and shutouts (4), as well as minutes played (1513:02), games started (25) and percentage of team minutes in goals (99.2%).
The Bobcats will play their final non-conference games of the season this weekend when they host Merrimack College on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. before traveling to North Andover, Mass. to play on the Warriors home ice on Saturday, Jan. 18.
