Men's Lacrosse Upends Detroit Mercy, 15-4

HAMDEN, Conn. – Ted Dimond (Marblehead, Mass.) scored three goals and added two assists as the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team defeated Detroit Mercy, 15-4, Sunday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field. With the win, the Bobcats snap a five-game losing skid to improve to 2-5, while the Titans drop to 0-7.

Kevin Kelly (Redding, Conn.) added two goals, while Mitch Cooper (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), Billy Alessi (Branford, Conn.), Mike Gast (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Zach Pall (Setauket, N.Y.), Jim Gianfelice (Wilbraham, Mass.), Jack Oppenheimer (Conshohocken, Pa.), Garett Kerr (Inglewood, Ontario), Jake Glebocki (South Hadley, Mass.), Brian Straub (Huntington, N.Y.) and A.J. Alessi (Branford, Conn.) each added one goal for the Bobcats.

Billy Alessi and Cooper joined Dimond in assisting on two goals apiece, while Mike Annunziata (Mahopac, N.Y.), Alex DeAlmeida (Point Pleasant, N.J.), Gast, Todd Kaiser (Summit, N.J.) and Kelly had one helper each.

Kevin Benzing (Severna Park, Md.) picked up the win for the Bobcats, making five saves on six opportunities in the first 30 minutes. Ryan Andrews (Smithtown, N.Y.) made five saves in the final 30 minutes, while allowing three goals.

Kevin Demorest and Michael Schumacher scored twice each for the Titans, while Vince Diana made 12 saves in defeat. Diana allowed all 15 Quinnipiac goals before giving way to Michael Lioi in the final five minutes.

The Bobcats took a 50-31 advantage in shots, as well as a 57-38 edge in ground balls. Detroit took a 14-9 advantage in face-offs.

The Bobcats scored the game's first nine goals, spanning just less than 25 minutes. Kelly scored the first two, less than a minute apart at the 13:59 and 13:04 marks, before assisting Dimond on the third at the 11:39 mark. Oppenheimer scored at the 10:56 mark off a DeAlmeida feed, before Dimond struck again, unassisted, with 4:48 left in the first quarter. Gianfelice and Kerr closed the quarter with goals on assists from Cooper and Dimond, respectively.

Gast opened the second-quarter scoring with just under seven minutes remaining off a Kaiser assist. Cooper made it 9-0 at the 5:27 mark before Schumacher ended the Quinnipiac run with an unassisted marker with 55 seconds left in the half.

Quinnipiac tacked on five more goals to begin the second half. Billy Alessi began the run at the 7:12 mark of the third quarter off a Cooper assist, before Glebocki scored, unassisted, at the 5:41 mark. Straub scored off a Gast assist at the 2:46 mark, and was followed by Dimond's third goal of the game off a Billy Alessi assist with 1:37 left in the third.

Pall got into the act, opening the fourth-quarter scoring, unassisted, at the 13:38 mark. Detroit countered with the next three goals. Demorest scored at the 13:05 and 9:55 marks, sandwiched around Schumacher's goal at the 12:24 mark. A.J. Alessi put an end to the scoring at the 6:01 mark of the fourth off an Annunziata assist.

The Bobcats return to Great Western Lacrosse League action Saturday, when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on Ohio State. The opening face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
