Men's Lacrosse Opens Season With 11-5 Loss Against No. 10 Loyola (Md.)
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team began the 2010 season with an 11-5 loss to ECAC opponent Loyola (MD) Saturday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Complex. The loss was the first in a season opener for the Bobcats in three years, dropping them to 0-1 overall and in ECAC Lacrosse play. The Greyhounds improve to 1-0 in conference play and 2-0 overall after beating Navy to open the season last week.
"We played well against the No. 10 team in the country," Head Coach Eric Fekete said. "To be down just four going into the final quarter was huge. But when you commit as many turnovers as we did today, it's going to be hard to win these games."
The Bobcats trailed 2-1 after one quarter of play. Senior midfielder Garret Kerr (Caledon, Ontario) scored the team's lone goal in the first on a quick pass from freshman Christian Haggerty (West Nyack, N.Y.) to the side of the net. The goal cut the deficit in half after tallies by Stephen Murray and Cooper MacDonnell gave the Greyhounds an early 2-0 lead.
After MacDonnell and Matt Langan put Loyola up three, 4-1, junior Bobby Schnibbe (Duxbury, Mass.) cut in from the right side and fired a shot past Greyhound goalkeeper Jake Hagelin. Senior Alex Marotto (South Windsor, Conn.) made it a one-goal game, 4-3, with 4:07 remaining in the first half after he beat Hagelin on a feed from senior Todd Kaiser (Summit, N.J.) in front of the goal. But a Patrick Fanshaw score with seven seconds showing on the clock gave the Greyhounds a 5-3 advantage headed into halftime.
Two goals from Loyola's Josh Hawkins and Taylor Ebsary were the only scoring in the third quarter. Eric Lusby scored just over a minute into the fourth to build the lead to five, 8-3. Kaiser tried to pull his team back into the game with a goal 10 yards out on a pass through two defenders from junior Kevin Kelly (Redding, Conn.), but Loyola's offense was too much.
Three more Loyola goals in the final five minutes put the game away with the Bobcats' Jack Oppenheimer (Conshohocken, Pa.) scoring his first of the season with 16 seconds left to make it an 11-5 final. Langan finished the game with three goals and three assists for a game-high six points. Kaiser was Quinnipiac's top player with a goal and an assist in the loss.
The Bobcats' senior goalkeeper Kevin Benzing (Severna Park, Md.) kept his team in the game throughout, making 16 total saves as the Greyhounds fired 39 total shots in the game. Hagelin finished with seven saves in the game.
Quinnipiac turned the ball over 26 times in the game, while Loyola committed 21 turnovers. The Greyhounds collected 36 ground balls in the win to the Bobcats' 32. Quinnipiac took eight penalties with Loyola scoring just once with the extra man. The Bobcats were 1-for-4 with the extra player in the game.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 3 as it hosts the Wagner Seahawks at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Complex. The teams are set to faceoff at 3 p.m.
