Mount St. Mary's Defeats Men's Lacrosse, 16-10
HAMDEN, Conn. - Mount St. Mary's compiled a pair of 5-0 runs in the first half and it was too much for Quinnipiac to overcome as the Mountaineers defeated the Bobcats, 16-10, Saturday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field. With the win, the Mountaineers (6-5, 3-0 NEC) take sole possession of first place in the league and the inside track on hosting the Northeast Conference Tournament, slated for May 6-8. The Bobcats fall to 4-6 (2-1 NEC) with the loss.
Basil Kostaras (Southlake, Texas), Brendan Wilbur (Hingham, Mass.) and Jay Binkowski (Bethany, Conn.) scored twice each for the Bobcats, while Kevin Kelly (Redding, Conn.), Jack Oppenheimer (Conshohocken, Pa.), Billy Alessi (Branford, Conn.) and Christian Haggerty (West Nyack, N.Y.) scored once each. Kelly contributed two assists, while Oppenheimer added one.
Brett Schmidt, Cody Lehrer and Andrew Scalley had three goals each for Mount St. Mary's. Schmidt added three assists, Lehrer had two and Scalley added one. Eric Ososki also added two goals and an assist for the Mount.
T.C. DiBartolo took the win for Mount St. Mary's, making 12 saves, while Kevin Benzing (Severna Park, Md.) made five saves in defeat for the Bobcats.
The Mountaineers came out firing in the early going, scoring the game's first five goals, the last coming less than a minute into the second quarter. Schmidt and Lehrer scored twice each in the span.
Quinnipiac responded with consecutive goals from Haggerty and Alessi at the 12:35 and 11:33 marks of the second quarter, but the Mountaineers ended the half on another 5-0 run. Five different Mountaineers got in on the act as they built their lead to 10-2 at the break.
Quinnipiac scored four of the second half's first five goals to cut the deficit to 11-6. But they could draw no closer and the Mountaineers took the 16-10 victory.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday, April 23, when they play host to intrastate NEC rival Sacred Heart. Opening face-off from the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the Bobcats will honor their seniors as part of Senior Day ceremonies.
