HAMDEN, Conn. – Freshman Michael Sagl (West Islip, N.Y.) scored a game-high four goals on Saturday afternoon, but the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team was defeated by Detroit Mercy, 13-10, at the QU Lacrosse Turf Field on Mount Carmel Campus. The Bobcats found the back of the net three times in the fourth quarter, however could not overcome a first-half deficit.
Quinnipiac, now 0-4 on the season, was led by a career-day from Sagl. He registered two assists and two groundballs to go along with his four tallies. Fellow classmate Pat Corcoran (Stratford, Conn.) also registered a multiple-goal game with two, while Brandon Kuring (New Milford, Conn.), Dylan Webster (Brampton, Ontario), Basil Kostaras (Southlake, Texas) and Chris Messina (West Islip, N.Y.) completed the scoring column for QU.
Detroit Mercy used a quick start in this one, scoring 10 out of the game's first 13 goals. Quinnipiac's comeback bid started late in the second frame though, as Messina's tally with two minutes remaining in the first half concluded a 10-4 lead for the Titans at the break.
After the intermission, the Bobcats' offense came to life behind back-to-back goals from Sagl. Sagl's second goal of the game left all of the momentum in QU's corner, as the Bobcats had pulled to within four goals early on in the third quarter.
However, the Titans proceeded to win the ensuing faceoff and marched down the field for their next goal. Shayne Adams' goal extended the lead back to five, an advantage they would never relinquish. The Bobcats pressured vigorously and performed well in the fourth quarter, but couldn't convert on key possessions down the stretch.
Turnovers proved to be the difference, as the Bobcats committed 27 of them on the afternoon. QU only surrendered a three-shot edge to Detroit, while handling the Titans on the faceoff, 17-10.
Kostaras added three assists and two ground balls for the Bobcats. Freshman Dylan Torey (Darien, Conn.) made eight saves between the posts, whereas his counterpart turned away seven for the Titans.
The Bobcats return to the pitch on Wednesday with a non-conference showdown at Saint Joseph's. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa. For all information regarding the men's lacrosse program, please visit www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
