SOMERSET, N.J. - Freshman Michael Sagl (West Islip, N.Y.) of the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team has been tabbed the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, announced on Monday, March 12, 2012 by the league office. Sagl put together two tremendous performances on the offensive end in a pair of non-conference games last week.
"Michael Sagl continues to have a very impressive freshman season for us," said Head Coach Eric Fekete. "He has shown great composure for a first-year player and has made an immediate impact on the offensive end. Michael improves every day and we hope for continued contributions from him the rest of the way."
Sagl had the hot stick for the Bobcats last week, as the West Islip, N.Y. native scored five times and handed out three assists in two home games. Against now No. 13 nationally ranked Fairfield, Sagl assisted on his team's first goal in the opening quarter before striking late in the fourth during a comeback attempt that fell short, 9-6. He then reeled off a career-high four goals – all in the second half - and picked up two assists in a 13-10 loss to Detroit Mercy.
Sagl is tied for the team-lead in points (10) and assists (4) and is tied for second in goals (6). He also leads the freshmen class in all three categories.
The Bobcats return to the pitch on Tuesday with a non-conference showdown at Saint Joseph's. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa. For all information regarding the men's lacrosse program, please visit www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
