PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomore Dylan Webster (Brampton, Ontario) registered his second hat trick of the season on Tuesday afternoon, but the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team was defeated by Saint Joseph's University, 8-7, at Finnesey Field. The Bobcats surrendered the game-winning goal with 3:06 seconds remaining in regulation, propelling the Hawks to a one-goal victory in Philadelphia, Pa.
The Bobcats, now 0-5 on the season, had five different Bobcats appear in the scoring column, led by Webster's three-spot. Michael Sagl (West Islip, N.Y.), Matt Diehl (Towson, Md.), Leo Horine (Dublin, Ohio) and Pat Corcoran (Stratford, Conn.) each added a goal in the losing effort. Sagl chimed in with two assists, while Basil Kostaras (Southlake, Texas), Diehl and Chris Messina (West Islip, N.Y.) each tallied a helper. Webster also posted a team-high four ground balls.
The Bobcats wasted little time getting the offense going in this one, as the visitors jumped out to a commanding lead early on. Webster's second goal of the game with 11:02 remaining in the second quarter granted QU a 6-0 advantage and complete control of the contest.
However, the Hawks quickly changed the momentum of the game, battling back with six unanswered goals of their own. Augustus Quinzani capped off the stretch with 23 seconds left in the third quarter, leaving the fourth frame to determine the winner.
Webster got the Bobcats off on the right foot with his final tally just 1:31 seconds into the quarter. After nearly 10 minutes of scoreless play, the Hawks found the equalizer off the stick of Ryan McGee. Some 90 seconds later, Quinzani netted his second goal of the game, which proved to be the difference in a heartbreaking setback for QU.
For the game, Saint Joseph's outshot Quinnipiac, 39-20, and edged the Bobcats in groundballs, 22-19. QU had three more turnovers, 16-13, but controlled the faceoffs, 10-9.
Dylan Torey (Darien, Conn.) made 13 saves in all 60 minutes between the posts for the Bobcats. His counterpart, Griffin Ferrigan, turned away seven shots for the Hawks.
The Bobcats return to the turf on Saturday with an intrastate showdown against Hartford. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m. in West Hartford, Conn. For all information regarding the men's lacrosse program, please visit www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
