Jay Binkowski's Late Goal Propels Men's Lacrosse Past Binghamton, 12-11
HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior Jay Binkowski (Bethany, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal with just 40 seconds remaining on Saturday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team upended Binghamton University, 12-11, at the QU Lacrosse Turf Field. The Bobcats held the Bearcats off in the waning moments, leaving Binkowski's third tally of the game as the difference.
Quinnipiac, now 1-6 overall on the season, placed six difference players in the scoring column of the box score. Michael Sagl (West Islip, N.Y.) led the way with a game-high four goals on six shots and collected a groundball. The game's hero, Binkowski, completed his first hat trick of the season to go along with a groundball and a caused turnover. Matt Diehl (Towson, Md.) and Brendan Wilbur (Hingham, Mass.) added four points apiece. Diehl posted a goal and three assists and Wilbur added two goals and two assists.
After a slow start last week at Hartford, the Bobcats bounced back with a strong first quarter in this one. Sagl netted the game's first two goals less than three minutes into the contest, including a beautifully crafted goal in the first 60 seconds of play. Binkowski then made it 3-0 after breaking a Bearcat 10-man ride, where he scored from well beyond the halfway line.
The Bobcats showed no signs of letting up and continued to click on the offensive end. QU scored four of the game's next six goals for a 7-2 lead with 11:19 seconds left in the first half. Wilbur, Sagl, Deihl and another from Wilbur found the back of the cage during the surge.
Binghamton wouldn't go away though, inching back into the game with an outburst on the offensive end. The Bearcats netted five of the next seven goals, leaving a 9-7 lead for the Bobcats at the break. Binkowski scored his second goal of the game, while Sagl chimed in with his fourth goal for QU.
Contrary to the opening stanza, the second half featured lower scoring affair that saw seven goals in the third and fourth quarters. Binghamton carried its momentum into the second half, scoring the next two goals to tie the score up at 9-9. J.T. Hauck and Michael Antinozzi scored for the Bearcats.
With the 9-9 deadlock, the final frame was needed to determine the winner. Binghamton struck first, but Brandon Kuring (New Milford, Conn.) answered with the equalizer with just less than five minutes to play. The Bobcats weren't through yet, as freshman Pat Corcoran (Stratford, Conn.) provided another boost with the go-ahead goal 1:09 seconds later for an 11-10 lead.
As the clock ticked inside of two minutes, Binghamton made the game interesting with its 11th goal of the game. Now with an 11-11 deadlock, Binkowski and the Bobcats put the nail in the coffin. Binkowski carried the ball into Bearcat territory, juked to get around his defender and buried his third goal for the game-winner. Dylan Webster (Brampton, Ontario) won the ensuing faceoff, allowing the Bobcats to hold off the Bearcats in the waning seconds.
Quinnipiac gathered more groundballs, 35-29, faceoffs, 15-11, and went 14-of-15 on attempts to clear the ball. Each team had 23 turnovers and Binghamton edged QU in shots, 31-29.
Freshman Dylan Torey (Darien, Conn.) collected his first career win between the pipes. He made nine saves opposed to seven from his counterpart.
The Bobcats return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon with a Northeast Conference showdown at Mount St. Mary's. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m. in Emmitsburg, Md. For all information regarding the men's lacrosse program, please visit www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
