Bobcats Stay Hot; Men's Lacrosse Improves To 2-0 In NEC With 15-5 Win Over Wagner
HAMDEN, Conn. – Nine different members of the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team appeared in the scoring column on Saturday afternoon, as the Bobcats cruised past Wagner, 15-5, in Northeast Conference action at the QU Lacrosse Turf Field. Sophomore Dylan Webster (Brampton, Ontario) paced the home team in their third straight win, registering four goals and five ground balls in the triumph.
With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 3-6 overall and 2-0 in the NEC standings, while the visiting Seahawks remain winless, falling to 0-10 on the season.
Webster's success in the faceoff circle has been a crucial component to the Bobcats' success, which was once again a key factor in the final outcome. Webster won 14-of-17 faceoff attempts in the game leading to a 16-7 advantage overall for Quinnipiac. In addition to the high faceoff percentage, QU's defense up and down the field was tremendous. The Bobcats forced 21 Wagner turnovers, causing 17 of them, and held the Seahawks to 55 percent (11-of-20) when attempting to clear the defensive zone.
Joining Webster with multiple goals were Jay Binkowski (Bethany, Conn.) and Basil Kostaras (Southlake, Texas). Binkowski completed his third hat trick of the season with three goals to go along with two ground balls, while Kostaras added two goals to extend his point-streak to 13 games. Matt Kycia (West Hartford, Conn.), Matt Diehl (Towson, Md.), Campbell Puckett (Dallas, Texas), Pat Corcoran (Stratford, Conn.), Brendan Wilbur (Hingham, Mass.) and Andrew Federico (Andover, Mass.) rounded out the scorers for QU.
The Bobcats jumped out in front quickly after the opening faceoff, scoring the game's first two goals just over two minutes into the contest. Webster found the cage first off a feed from Diehl, followed by an unassisted tally from Binkowski 40 seconds later. Quinnipiac carried its momentum through the quarter, doubling up the Seahawks, 4-2, by the end of the frame. Binkowski (unassisted) and Webster scored for the Bobcats, with Webster's coming off a pass from Michael Sagl (West Islip, N.Y.).
In the second quarter, Diehl (unassisted) recorded QU's fifth goal and then proceeded to assist on the next one. Diehl found Wilbur for the team's sixth goal, granting the Bobcats a 6-2 lead. Wagner cut its lead in half, 6-3, but Quinnipiac responded with a detrimental 8-0 run all the way into the fourth frame. Kostaras (2), Webster (2), Corcoran, Kycia, Puckett and Binkowski all found the back of the cage during the stretch.
Wagner mustered two goals in the final five minutes, but the deficit was much too high to overcome. Federico capped off the game's scoring summary with his first goal of the season with just under 90 seconds to play to solidify the team's second win at home.
In addition to clear attempts and face-offs, the Bobcats controlled other statistics as well. QU totaled more shots (44-18) and ground balls (34-19) than Wagner. In goal, Dylan Torey (Darien, Conn.) made all four saves for the win, while Pat Murray (Branford, Conn.) and Eddie Greco (Kings Park, N.Y.) also contributed between the pipes for Quinnipiac. Chris Coppolecchia (Somers, N.Y.) aided the defense's strongest showing with four caused turnovers on the afternoon.
The Bobcats return to the turf on Tuesday night with a non-conference match-up at Harvard University. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. under the lights at Harvard Stadium. For all the latest news and information regarding the men's lacrosse program, please visit www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
