HAMDEN, Conn. – Seniors Basil Kostaras (Southlake, Texas), Jay Binkowski (Bethany, Conn.), Chris Messina (West Islip, N.Y.) and Brendan Wilbur (Hingham, Mass.) are set to captain the 2013 Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team this spring. In search for their first Northeast Conference Tournament title, head coach Erik Fekete has announced that these four seniors will lead the way.
Kostaras, a 2011 Northeast Conference Second Team honoree, anchored the Bobcats' midfield in 2012. Despite missing some time with an injury, he finished second on the team in assists (8), third in goals scored (15) and fourth in total points (23). He also added nine ground balls and one caused turnover in 13 appearances. Kostaras' campaign was highlighted by a hat trick in the opening quarter of the season. He went on to record four multiple-point games, including three four-point outings. Kostaras was also named to the All-NEILA Second Team.
A fellow midfielder and classmate, Binkowski returns for his final season after his best campaign to date in 2012. He finished with eight goals and one assist for nine points – good enough for sixth-best on the team. Primarily an offensive spark for the Bobcats, Binkowski also added 12 ground balls and caused five turnovers in 12 appearances. The highlights of his season came against Binghamton and Wagner, where he recorded hat tricks in both victories. In the final game of the season, he found the back of the net against Bryant in the first quarter of the Northeast Conference Semifinals.
A team captain for a second season, Messina has played in all but two games over the last two seasons - compiling two goals and an assist for a total of three points. An outstanding leader in the middle of the turf, he also has 23 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers for his career. In his most recent campaign, he put together his strongest all-around effort, highlighted by three ground balls, two caused turnovers and an assist against Saint Joseph's back in March. Messina recorded his goals against Detroit Mercy and NEC foe Sacred Heart.
Wilbur emerged as a major offensive threat for the Bobcats in 2012, compiling 11 of his 13 goals in the final eight games of competition. Wilbur's 13 goals, seven assists and 20 total points had him ranked either fourth or fifth among team leaders in each category. He had seven multipoint games through the campaign, including a season-high four points with two goals and two assists in the win over Binghamton. With his breakout year, he has 21 goals and 11 assists for 32 points in his career – which are good enough for third among active players.
The Bobcats begin the 2013 season with two exhibition games in February. QU opens at home against Dartmouth on the 9th and then travels to Yale for a scrimmage against Tufts on the 17th. Quinnipiac opens the regular season on February 23rd at Brown and will kick off its home slate on March 12th against BIG EAST foe Providence.
