VESTEL, N.Y. - Freshman Billy Oppenheimer (Conshohocken,Pa.) notched a career high of four points on Saturday afternoon, but the Quinnipiac's Men's Lacrosse team fell short to Binghamton, 11-9, at the Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestel, N.Y. Quinnipiac, now 3-4, on the season, has suffered four straight losses by two or fewer goals, while the hosting Bearcats improved to 4-4 on the season.
Oppenheimer, who recorded his first career points against Fairfield on Tuesday, led all Bobcats with four points on two goals and two assists. Joining Oppenheimer with multi-goal games were Michael Sagl (West Islip, N.Y.) and Brendan Wilbur (Hingham, Mass.) who each finished with two goals apiece. Basil Kostaras (Southlake, Texas) and Matt Diehl (Towson, Md.) each added a goal and an assist, while Carmen French (Baltimore, Md.) tallied his second goal of the season.
After falling behind, 4-2, in the first quarter, Quinnipiac bounced back with the first two goals of the second frame. Sagl scored off a feed from Oppenheimer to make it, 4-3, and then French added another to tie the game up at four apiece. The Bearcats answered with their fifth goal of the game, leaving a 5-4 score at halftime in favor of the home team.
After the break, Binghamton quickly extended their lead to two goals, however; the Bobcats' offense came back to life. Sagl cut the Bearcat lead to one with his second goal of the game, which was then followed by an Oppenheimer goal just seconds later to tie the game up at 6-6. Quinnipiac wasn't though yet though as Wilbur scored to grant the Bobcats their first lead of the game with 11:19 remaining in the third quarter.
Unfortunately for the visiting Bobcats, Binghamton would answer with three straight goals of its own to take a two-goal lead, 9-7, to close out the third quarter. The two teams each exchanged a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes, leaving Quinnipiac with their first road loss of the 2013 season.
Gill Conners (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) posted another game with at least 10 saves, turning aside 15 shots on the afternoon. His counterpart, Max Schefler, made 13 saves in the winning effort.
For the game, the Bobcats mustered a turnover margin of plus-10, 18-8, at the strength of six caused turnovers. However, it was the discrepancy on the faceoff that gave Binghamton its edge as the Bearcats controlled the circle, 17-7. BU also outshot QU, 43-34, and collected the edge in groundballs, 32-24.
Binghamton was led by Matt Springer, who finished with three goals, while Brandon Planck and Kelly Donigan each collected a pair of goals in the outing for the Bearcats.
Quinnipiac opens Northeast Conference play next week, as the Bobcats will head to Bryant University on Saturday, March 30, 2013. QU and BU will square off at Bulldog Stadium, with all the action set for 1 p.m.
