HAMDEN, Conn. – 13th year Quinnipiac men's lacrosse head coach Eric Fekete released the Bobcats' 2014 schedule on Tuesday which features one game against cross-town rival Yale, who finished the 2013 campaign ranked seventh in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Poll, and another against reigning MAAC Champion and NCAA Tournament participant Detroit Mercy.
"I'm excited to announce our 2014 schedule," said Fekete. "Once again it presents a significant challenge for our program, but after a fall in which we made many positive strides, we look forward to the opportunity to compete against such quality opponents."
Quinnipiac is on tap to play a 14-game regular-season schedule with six contests to be played on its home field, the QU Lacrosse Turf Complex. All home games will be played at noon. Additionally, the Bobcats will endure their first season in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), joining the likes of Manhattan, Detroit Mercy, Marist, Siena, Canisius and another first-year member Monmouth.
Prior to the 2014 home-opener, Quinnipiac gears up for the regular season with two preseason scrimmages. The Bobcats take on two Ivy League opponents in Dartmouth (2/8) and Penn (2/15) – both taking place on the road. Dartmouth finished the 2013 season at the bottom in the league standings, while the Quakers earned an 8-5 overall record and the third seed of the Ivy League Tournament.
Quinnipiac's home-opener takes place on Saturday, Feb. 22 against Brown University, a team that went 8-6 last season. Quinnipiac was responsible for one of Brown's six losses when the Bobcats knocked off the foe, 9-7, in the first game of the season.
After that, the Bobcats endure a three-game road swing, featuring Providence (3/1), Harvard (3/4) and Hartford (3/12). All three were among the region's leaders last year, but each struggled mightily in conference play. Providence posted an 8-8 final mark, Harvard was 6-8 overall, and Hartford finished with a 7-7 record. Hartford was the only team of the three to advance to the postseason, but fell in the first round of the America East Tournament.
Quinnipiac's inaugural MAAC contest is next as the Bobcats are scheduled to host Manhattan College on Saturday, March 15 at the QU Lacrosse Turf Complex. The Jaspers struggled last year and finished with a 4-11 record overall and just a 1-5 mark in the MAAC. Ryan Payton returns for his senior season after posting 18 goals and nine assists, serving as the team's second-leading scorer.
The Bobcats wrap up the month of March and begin the month of April on the road. Quinnipiac begins a four-game road trip at Marist (3/22) which is followed by Detroit Mercy the following weekend (3/29). Marist claimed a share of the 2013 MAAC Regular Season Title and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. Detroit Mercy earned the fourth seed in the playoff and advanced to the NCAA's big dance with two wins in the conference tournament. The Bobcats complete the road swing with a non-conference game at Stony Brook (4/1) and the team's fourth conference game at Monmouth (4/5).
Quinnipiac looks to take advantage of a favorable home stretch, as the Bobcats play four of their final five games at the QU Lacrosse Turf Complex. Quinnipiac hosts Canisius (4/12), Fairfield (4/15), Siena (4/19) and Air Force (4/26) while mixing in a trip to Reece Stadium for a clash with Yale on Tuesday, April 22, 2014.
Canisius missed out on the MAAC Tournament after going 2-4 in conference play last season. Siena on the other hand claimed the third seed in the tournament with a 4-2 mark in league play. The Saints' season concluded in the MAAC Championship with an 11-10 loss to the Titans.
The final three non-conference games each present challenging tasks for the Bobcats. Fairfield finished 8-7 last year which included a thrilling 11-10 win over Quinnipiac in March. Yale compiled a 12-5 mark in 2013, and made its way to the NCAA Tournament after receiving the Ivy League's automatic bid. The Bulldogs defeated Penn State in the NCAA First Round before falling to Syracuse in the Quarterfinals. Air Force posted a 7-7 record overall and a 2-5 mark in ECAC Lacrosse competition. Five of the Falcons' seven losses were by two goals or fewer.
After the regular season, the MAAC's top four seeds will compete for the 2014 MAAC Championship, and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The entire tournament will take place at Marist's home site, Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The semifinals will take place on Thursday, May 1 with the championship scheduled for Saturday, May 3.
