Men's Soccer Wins NEC Opener, 3-0, At Long Island

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Dwayne Mars (St. Michael, Barbados) scored two goals as the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team defeated Long Island University on Friday afternoon, 3-0. Quinnipiac scored all three goals after the 84th minute to win its first Northeast Conference contest of the season. Quinnipiac improves its record to 6-2-2 overall, while the loss drops Long Island to 5-5-0 and 0-1 in the NEC.

Neither team was able to score in the first half, but a red card to Long Island opened the game up for the Bobcats as they played up one player for the final 27 minutes of the contest.

Mars broke the scoreless tie in the 85th minute on his second goal of the season. Sean McGarrity (Cheshire, Conn.) collected his first assist of the season as he made beat two defenders along the sideline before making a crossing pass to the back post. Mars made a 30-yard run to the post to kick the ball into back of the net.

Mars scored his second goal with three minutes reaming in the game to take a 2-0 lead. Mars ran down a loose ball in the box and kicked it past the Blackbirds' goalkeeper Adam Janssen.

Quinnipiac's Graciano Brito (Sao Nicolau, Cape Verde) gave the Bobcats' a three-goal advantage just under a minute later. The senior midfielder ran down the right side of the field before blasting a shot past Janssen into the right side of the net.

Freddy Hall (St. George, Bermuda) stopped all five shots he faced for his third shutout of the season. Janssen turned away two Quinnipiac shots, but was unable to stop any of the three he faced in the second half

"This was a typical, hard-fought game NEC match," said Head Coach Eric Da Costa. "It was a physical battle, but I think we were the better team today. The team played well and kept their heads in what was a very tight game."

The Bobcats returns to play on Sunday when they travel to Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., to take on NEC foe, St. Francis College at 2 p.m.
