HAMDEN, Conn. - Freshman Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wisc.) of the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team was named the adidas/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week. This is the first time that Suprise has been honored as the NEC's top freshman player after his hat trick led the Bobcats to a 3-0 win over Bryant on Friday, Oct. 9 in Hamden. Suprise now leads the team with five goals and 11 points this season, while ranking third in the NEC in goals and sixth in points.
Suprise's first goal came in the 13th minute. His shot from the left side overpowered the Bryant goalkeeper who was able to get both hands on the ball, but deflected it into the back corner of the goal. The freshman forward would net another first-half tally in the 32nd minute on a pass from junior Nick Pelicaen (Schoten, Belgium) at midfield. Pelicaen put a pass between two defenders to Suprise along the right sideline. Suprise carried the ball for 30 yards before cutting to the middle for the low shot past the Bulldog netminder.
The final goal to complete the hat trick came from just outside the top of the 18-yard box. Sophomore Durval Pereira (Cheshire, Conn.) found Suprise cutting to the goal from the right side of the field. After collecting the pass, the first-year Bobcat took one step before firing a low shot to the far corner for his third goal of the game.
Quinnipiac takes on Boston College today at 4 p.m., in Newton, Mass. It marks the final nonconference game of the season for the Bobcats who will play NEC competition the rest of the schedule.
