Men's Soccer Loses, 2-1, To Loyola, (Md.)
HAMDEN, Conn. - The
Quinnipiac University men's soccer team was defeated, 2-1, in a
close contest against non-conference opponent Loyola (Md.)
University at Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore, Md. The loss
drops Quinnipiac to 0-3 on the season while the win elevates Loyola
(Md.) to 1-1-1 on the year.
The Bobcats opened the scoring in the 41st minute of play when sophomore William Daniels (Bethany, Conn.) drilled a shot from just outside the goalkeeper's box and by the Greyhounds senior goalkeeper Kyle Wittman. The goal was Daniels' first goal with Quinnipiac as well as the Bobcats' first goal on the season.
Quinnipiac's lead was short lived, as Loyola (Md.) responded just over a minute later on a corner kick in the 42nd minute. Senior defender Zach Tweddell's header found the back of the net, sending the teams into halftime tied at one apiece. Senior defender Charlie Hutton took the corner kick and was credited with the assist on the play.
The Bobcats were again victim to a late second half goal, this time by senior midfielder Eddie Dines who scored in the 83rd minute of play to give Loyola (Md.) what would be the eventual game-winning tally. The goal was Dines' first goal on the season while senior midfielder Danny Ankrah was credited with his first assist of the year.
Despite registering a season-high 14 shots, Quinnipiac was only able to put five of those on target. Junior defender Matthew Rothbart (Cheshire, Conn.) and senior forward Nick Pelicaen (Schoten, Belgium) provided pressure on goal, registering three of the five shots on net.
Quinnipiac returns to action Saturday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m., when it travels to Providence, R.I. to face the Friars of Providence College.
