Quinnipiac Men's Soccer Comes From Behind To Win NEC Opener, 2-1, Against Mount St. Mary's
HAMDEN, Conn. - Junior defender Matthew Rothbart (Cheshire, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal in the 87thminute as the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team overcame a halftime deficit while playing a man down to defeat Mount St. Mary's, 2-1, in the Bobcats Northeast Conference opener. The Bobcats are now 1-0-0 in NEC play and 1-5-1 overall. The Mountaineers are now 1-1-0 in NEC action and 4-6-0 overall.
Mount St. Mary's took a 1-0 lead in the 26thminute of the first half, on a goal off a corner kick. Sophomore defender Alex Ockford found an opening in the goalkeeper's box and headed the ball by Bobcats sophomore goalkeeper Josh Lavallee (Upland, Calif.). On the play, senior forward Scott Phinith was awarded with the assist.
Prior to the conclusion of the first half, senior forward Dominic Adams (John Dial, Trinidad and Tobago) was whistled for a red card, forcing the Bobcats to play a man down the rest of the way.
Senior defender Pierre Soubrier (Aurignac, France) recorded Quinnipiac's first goal in the 49thminute off a penalty kick. Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper Chris Davis guessed correctly, but Soubrier's ball had too much pace as it sailed into the top, left corner of the net. The goal for Soubrier was his first of the season.
On the game-winning goal, Rothbart corralled a bounding ball and drilled a left-footed shot from outside the goalkeeper's box past the diving keeper. The goal was Rothbart's team-leading third of the season.
Lavallee made five saves on the afternoon, including two impressive diving stops, while Davis made three saves of his own.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, Oct. 8 at 3:30 p.m. in an away NEC matchup against Saint Francis (Pa.).
