NEWARK, N.J. – The Quinnipiac men's soccer team fell to non-conference opponent NJIT, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium. Freshman forward Ola Ogunjobi (London, England) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season for the Bobcats, which saw their record fall to 3-4. With the win, the Highlanders improve their record to 2-7-2 on the year.
NJIT found the back of the net early in the contest, taking the 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of play off a goal from junior midfielder Nathan D'Aversa. On the score, senior defender Angel Gomez was credited with the assist.
Quinnipiac fought back to tie the score at one apiece in the 57th minute of play, as Ogunjobi was assisted by fellow freshman Machel Baker (Spanish Town, Jamacia) on the goal.
The Bobcats staved off multiple offensive attacks in the second half, as junior goalkeeper Josh Lavallee (Upland, Calif.) made three of his six saves in the half. Overall, Lavallee made six saves in the game, compared to his counterpart junior Lars Maalen-Johanse's three saves.
Junior defender Christian Galindo scored the game-winning goal for NJIT just over two minutes into the first overtime, finding himself in the perfect position to collect a rebounded ball and knocked it past Lavallee for his second goal of the season.
NJIT outshot Quinnipiac 22-to-6 in the game and held an 8-to-3 corner kick advantage overall.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. when it hosts NEC opponent St. Francis (Pa.) at Quinnipiac Soccer Field.
