NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's soccer team lost to Northeast Conference opponent Long Island University, 1-0, in a game played at Yale University on Tuesday night. With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 6-8 overall and 4-4 in NEC play, while the Blackbirds improve to 5-9-3 on the year and 3-5-1 in league action.
Long Island scored the lone goal in the 66th minute of play on a header from Blackbirds' freshman defender Kory Leis. Leis notched his first goal of the season on a double assist from senior midfielder Josh Maley and senior forward Steve Jakubowski. Maley crossed the ball from the left side into the box to find Jakubowski, who headed the ball over to Leis who then headed the ball into the right corner of the net.
Quinnipiac's best scoring opportunity in the contest came off the foot of senior midfielder Brett Uttley (Jamestown, R.I.), who, in the 20th minute, launched the ball up the middle of the field to freshman forward Ola Ogunjobi (London, England) whose finesse shot beat Long Island's goalie, but was cleared off the line at the last minute by a Long Island defender.
Freshman goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) turned away four shots in net for Quinnipiac, while his counterpart junior Nathan Stockie also made four saves for the Blackbirds.
The Bobcats continue NEC play when they travel to Sacred Heart on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. Quinnipiac will then hosts St. Francis (N.Y.) in its final NEC contest of the 2011 regular season on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field. The team will honor its graduating seniors prior to the start of Sunday's match-up.
