SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Quinnipiac University Men's Soccer Head Coach Eric Da Costa collected his 50th career win on Sunday afternoon, as the Bobcats netted a pair of goals late in the contest to pick up three points on the road at Bryant University. Senior William Daniels (Clackamas, Ore.) and sophomore Justin Ward (New Egypt, N.J.) each scored a goal with less than 10 minutes remaining to lift the Bobcats to a 2-0 victory at Bulldogs Stadium in Smithfield, R.I.
"We made late work but got the job done against a much improved Bryant squad," said Da Costa. It was important for us to have a positive response and bounce back today. We did it and it was a complete team effort."
With the win, Quinnipiac climbs back to the .500 mark at 5-5-2 overall, but more importantly moved into double-digits with 10 points in the NEC standings. The Bulldogs fall to 3-6-1, 1-4 in league play.
Offense was non-existent through the first 83 minutes of play; however that all changed when the visiting Bobcats opened the scoring summary in the 84th minute. Junior Sam Nicol (Edinburgh, Scotland) worked his way into the penalty area and played a crafty ball across the goalmouth to the back-post. Waiting there patiently was Daniels, who buried a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Daniels' ninth career goal and fourth of the 2012 season.
Just six minutes later, the Bobcats added some insurance – this time off the foot of Justin Ward. The sophomore midfielder capitalized on a breakaway and found the nylon for his first career goal. The tally came with just 30 seconds left in the match, solidifying a 2-0 final at Bulldogs Stadium.
The win improved Quinnipiac to 7-7 in the all-time series. The Bobcats have won seven of the last nine meetings, including a 3-1 mark since Bryant joined the NCAA's Division back in 2009.
For the game, Quinnipiac outshot Bryant, 14-11, while surrendering a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) picked up his second shutout of the season with a season-high eight saves in his fifth win. His counterpart, Chris Knaub, made four saves in the losing effort.
The Bobcats will enjoy a week of rest before their next game, when Quinnipiac welcomes Mount St. Mary's to Mount Carmel Campus on Sunday, October 19. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at the QU Soccer Field.
