SOMERSET, N.J. – Sophomore goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) helped the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team to a pair of wins this past weekend and was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week for his efforts between the posts. It's the first career accolade for Angoitia and marks the second time a Bobcat has received the honor this season.
Angoitia combined for 11 saves and one assist as the Bobcats punched their ticket to the 2012 NEC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament. The second-year net-minder allowed just one goal in the two games against the Western Pennsylvania contingent of the NEC, surrendering a penalty kick strike in a 3-1 win over Robert Morris. Angoitia opened the weekend with a 2-0 shutout of Saint Francis (PA), his fourth blanking of the season. He made six of his 11 stops against the Red Flash and picked up his first career assist on a long boot to Machel Baker, who made it a 2-0 game at the time. The Bilbao, Spain native then posted five saves, including a point-blank stop in the 65th minute, in the win over RMU, a victory that clinched the Bobcats' first playoff appearance since 2009.
In prime position to potentially host the NEC Tournament, Quinnipiac will need two strong results in the final weekend of competition. The Bobcats welcome CCSU, who is ineligible for the NEC Tournament due academic ineligibility, on Friday and FDU on Sunday.
