William Cavallo Named NEC, College Sports Madness and College Soccer News Player of the Week
HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior William Cavallo (Londonderry, N.H.) led the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team to two wins this past weekend and helped the Bobcats clinch the 2012 Northeast Conference Regular-Season Title on Sunday afternoon. For his efforts, he was named the NEC, CollegeSportsMadness and College Soccer News Player of the Week, all announced on Monday, November 5, 2012.
Cavallo scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lift Quinnipiac to a 3-0 victory in a winner-takes-all match against Fairleigh Dickinson, clinching the Bobcats' first-ever regular-season title and hosting rights for the 2012 NEC Tournament. The Londonderry, NH product netted the eventual game-deciding goal with just 28:43 elapsed into the first half. He then capped the contest with his third strike of the year in the 81st minute. Just two days prior, Cavallo helped QU defeat Nutmeg State rival Central Connecticut, 2-0, to setup the title match against the Knights.
The marks the first time all season that one player has collected all three honors. It was also the second consecutive week that a Bobcat earned NEC Player of the Week honors. Sophomore goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) earned the accolade last Monday for a stellar week between the posts.
As the #1 seed, the Bobcats will host the #2 seed Fairleigh Dickinson University, #3 seed Monmouth University and #4 seed Saint Francis University (Pa.) in the 2012 NEC Tournament this coming weekend. Quinnipiac opens the four-team playoff against the Red Flash on Friday morning at 11 a.m.
