College Sports Madness Honors Four Bobcats With Accolades
HAMDEN, Conn. – College Sports Madness announced the 2012 Madness NEC Men's Soccer All-Conference Teams which included four members from Quinnipiac University. Head Coach Eric Da Costa was tabbed the Coach of the Year, while seniors Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Robbie McLarney (Londonderry, N.H.) were named to the First Team and fellow classmate William Daniels (Clackamas, Ore.) was named to the Second Team. The staff at College Sports Madness picked the nation's top college soccer players that have made significant contributions to their teams this season.
The College Sports Madness NEC Coach of the Year accolade is the first of Da Costa's career with the Bobcats. In 2007, Da Costa was selected as the NSCAA/Adidas North Atlantic Division I Coach of the Year in just his third season with the Bobcats. Under his guidance, Da Costa turned a 2012 team that was selected to finish eighth in the NEC Preseason Coaches' Poll into the Regular-Season Champions and host of the NEC Championship. Da Costa and the Bobcats compiled a 10-5-3 record overall, including an 8-1-1 mark in conference competition. The 10 regular-season wins ties the Division I record for wins in a single season.
The Bobcats leading scorer, Philip Surprise, earned his second trip to the NEC First-Team and fourth career conference accolade. Suprise ranked amongst the conference leaders in several categories in 2012, including goals, goals per game, points, and points per game. He posted a career-best eight goals and two assists for team-leading 18 points this season. Suprise netted his 25th career goal for the Bobcats against Fairleigh Dickinson (11/4), moving into eighth place all-time in goals, ninth place all-time in points (59), and finished one assist shy of cracking top 15 all-time.
Quinnipiac's next senior to be honored by the committee was Robbie McLarney, who provided an immediate impact after transferring from Rutgers University this year. McLarney anchored a formidable midfield this year, leading the conference with seven assists to go along with three goals for a total of 15 points. McLarney put away the game-winner against the Blue Devils (11/2), allowing the Bobcats to play in the winner-take-all match against FDU (11/4). McLarney had six goals and 11 assists for his career between the two schools.
Fellow senior and striker, William Daniels, earned a postseason laurel for the first time in a Bobcats' uniform. Daniels came to Quinnipiac from Mount Ida College in 2009, and put together his best campaign to date with six goals and one assist for 13 total points. Between the two schools, he compiled 21 goals and three assists for a total of 45 points at the collegiate level. Daniels had several memorable moments in 2012, highlighted by a pair of game-winning goals; one at Bryant and another at Robert Morris.
