EDISON, N.J. – After two stellar performances last week, junior Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) has been named the MAAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday, Sept. 16, 2013 by the league's office. Angoitia was instrumental in net for the Bobcats, which included their first win of the 2013 season.
Borja Angoitia posted 10 saves in a 1-1 week for the Bobcats. In the first game of the week against 2012 NCAA Tournament participant Loyola (Md.), Angoitia made a season-high seven saves in an unfortunate 1-0 loss. Angoitia was stellar all match, but a breakaway goal in the 83rd minute proved to be the difference in the losing effort. Angoitia followed that performance with three saves and his first clean sheet of the season in a 1-0 win over Holy Cross. Angoitia made two saves in the first half and one in the second to preserve the shutout.
No stranger to a clean sheet, Angoitia continues to make his way upwards in Quinnipiac's all-time record books. He moved into a tie for second place on the career shutouts list (7) and also picked up his 17th career win, which is good enough for third all-time in the category. Angoitia joins five other goalkeepers around the league with one shutout thus far.
The Bobcats are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 18 with its third home game of the 2013 campaign. Quinnipiac welcomes Army for a 4 p.m. start at the QU Soccer Field on Mount Carmel Campus.
