WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Quinnipiac University men's soccer team had its six-game unbeaten streak snapped on Saturday night, as the Bobcats suffered its first loss in MAAC play in a 1-0 decision at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J. The game featured the league's two remaining undefeated teams, and leaves the Hawks alone at the top of the table.
Quinnipiac, now 6-4-4 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play, had a run of six games without a loss dating back to Sept. 28 at Yale. The Bobcats also entered with a four-game winning streak on the line.
The Bobcats and the Hawks were very evenly matched throughout the 90 minutes, but one strike proved to be the difference. In the 59th minute of play, Monmouth's leading scorer Jacob Rubinstein netted his fourth goal of the season to put the Hawks in front 1-0. Francois Navarro and Joseph Schmid were involved in the buildup and credited with assists on the play.
Evidenced by a 10-7 advantage in shots and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks, Quinnipiac controlled a good portion of the possession throughout the night. However, the Bobcats managed to put just two shots on frame, both of which were turned aside by Monmouth's goalkeeper, Eric Klenofsky.
Senior goalkeeper Jason Vancura (Whitman, Mass.) made one save on two shots in his second career start. Vancura picked up his first career shutout in his first career start against Manhattan on Wednesday (Oct. 23).
The Hawks have fared well in the all-time series dating back to the inaugural meeting when QU first joined NCAA Division I. MU is now 12-3-2 against QU and 8-0-2 in their last 10 meetings.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 30 with a home game against Fairfield. The Bobcats and the Stags take the field for a 2 p.m. tilt at the QU Soccer Field in Hamden.
Monmouth returns to the field with a Wednesday night affair with Manhattan in Riverdale, N.Y. The Hawks have won six straight and are unbeaten in their last seven.
