Men's Soccer Hosts Annual Season-Ending Banquet

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's soccer team held its annual season-ending banquet at the Laurel View Country Club in Hamden, Conn. on Saturday, April 26, 2014. The team's five graduating student-athletes, Simon Hinde (Canberra, Australia), Sam Nicol (Edinburgh, Scotland), Brandon Straine-Goode (Toronto, Ontario), Jason Vancura (Whitman, Mass.) and Ola Ogunjobi (London, England) were honored for their dedication and commitment to the program.

The 2013 campaign was one for the record books, as the Bobcats trekked through the 2014 MAAC schedule title en route to the program's second straight regular-season title. Quinnipiac took it one step further and won the 2014 MAAC Championship to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. On Saturday, players, coaches and staff were all presented with rings to commemorate the magical season.

The team's annual award winners were also announced at the yearly gathering. Junior Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) headlined the group of recipients and was selected Quinnipiac Men's Soccer Player of the Year. Simon Hinde was named the Players' Player of the Year; freshman James Doig (Liverpool, England) was tabbed Newcomer of the Year; and for the third year in a row, Zach Friedenreich (Edison, N.J.) was named Academic Player of the Year.

Borja Angoitia, who is making a formidable case to go down as Quinnipiac's best goalkeeper of all-time, earned Player of the Year laurels after a prolific 2013 season. Angoitia posted a record of 7-4-7 and was 17th in the country with a .698 goals against average. He set a new program record with 10 shutouts and finished second in QU single-season history with his GAA and tied for sixth with a .843 save percentage. Angoitia really shined in the MAAC Tournament where he had six saves in the match with Iona and five saves in the contest with Monmouth. In both matches, he made a crucial stop in the penalty kick shootout and also converted a penalty kick in each shootout himself.

Simon Hinde, Quinnipiac's offensive catalyst throughout the 2013 season, was presented the Players' Player of the Year after a stellar senior season. Hinde finished with 10 goals and one assist for a total of 21 points in his final year of collegiate eligibility. Included in the 10 goals were five game-winners, one of which came in the team's final regular season game to clinch a share of the 2013 MAAC Regular Season Title. His 10 goals this past season left him just outside of 10th place all-time for most goals in a season at Quinnipiac, and had him ranked amongst the national and MAAC leaders as well.

James Doig was thrown into the fire as a freshman, and excelled at the opportunity en route to Newcomer of the Year honors. One of the most reliable players on the pitch, Doig started in all 19 games he appeared in and picked up three assists on the season. All three assists were essential with all of them proving to be game-winners. He recorded game-winning assists in the victories over Yale, Marist and Canisius.

For the third straight year, Friedenreich garnered this year's Academic Player of the Year honors after posting one of the highest overall grade point averages among all QU student-athletes. His run began in 2011 when he won the award as a rookie. On the field of play, Friedenreich put together career numbers in 2013. He earned five starts and appeared in 15 games for the Bobcats.
