HAMDEN, Conn. Quinnipiac University junior tennis players Mary Wilson (Greensburg, Pa.) and Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.) were both named Northeast Conference Player of the Week, the league office today announced. Wilson went 3-1 this week, while Feldman won twice in the team's Maryland road trip.
The award is the fifth of Wilson's career and the second this season. Feldman's first honor of the season is the fourth of his career. The Bobcats' men and women swept the awards for the second straight week, while the men took the award for the third straight week. Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.) had won the two prior weeks for the men, while Natalie Duckor (North Tustin, Calif.) took the award last week.
Wilson defeated the top player from Mount St. Mary's, Emily Bolchoz, 7-5, 6-2, March 13. She also paired with sophomore Adrienne Markison (Princeton, N.J.) to earn a pair of doubles victories. The duo first defeated Maryland-Baltimore County's Alice Chen and Carmen Jackman, 8-5, to account for the Bobcats' lone triumph in a 7-0 loss to the Retrievers. Wilson and Markison then beat Bolchoz and Emma Haley of Mount St. Mary's, 8-5, to help the Bobcats to a 6-1 victory against the Mountaineers.
Feldman won a pair of matches against the Mountaineers. He beat Jastin Mostowtt, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 singles and paired with fellow junior John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.) to defeat Thad Mostowtt and Sam Walton, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. Feldman was also the Bobcat who came closest to a victory at Maryland-Baltimore County, taking Allen Tsang to a third set before falling, 6-7, 6-3, 10-6, at No. 5.
The Quinnipiac women's tennis team returns to action Sunday, when they play host to Binghamton at 10 a.m. The men's team returns to play Wednesday, March 25, when they travel to intrastate foe Fairfield. Matches are set to begin at 3 p.m.
