OCEAN, N.J. John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.), Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) and Tom Curran (Fairfield, Conn.) earned wins in both singles and doubles as the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team defeated Monmouth, 4-3, Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 8-5 (2-1 NEC), while the Hawks fall to 5-13 (2-3 NEC).
James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.), Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.) and Joe Nuara (Little Silver, N.J.) also took part in a doubles win for the Bobcats. Quinnipiac opened the match with wins in each of the three doubles contests to take the first point.
Nuara and Curran made quick work of David Sherwood and Tim McLane, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles. Feldman and Hughes then clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 victory against Laurence Heads and Vik Gupta at No. 2. Mikkelson and Kwei completed doubles play with a 9-8 (6) win against Benjamin Evenden and Ian Terpilowski at No. 1.
Mikkelson was first to finish off his singles opponent, beating Gupta, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. The Bobcats took a 3-0 lead as Hughes cruised past Evenden, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1.
But the Hawks didn't go down without a fight, taking No. 3, 4, and 5 singles in succession to tie the match at 3-3. Heads beat Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.), 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3, before Sherwood took a third-set tie-breaker victory against Kwei, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7). Terpilowski then beat Feldman, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5.
Curran put the match away with a 6-4, 6-2, against McLane at No. 6.
The Bobcats return to action Tuesday, when they play host to Stony Brook. Prior to the match, the Bobcats will honor their two-member senior class as part of Senior Day ceremonies. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
