HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac's Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.), James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) and Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) all earned double wins as the Bobcats men's tennis team breezed past the University of Connecticut, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon. All but the end of the No. 6 singles match was contested on the Quinnipiac Outdoor Tennis Courts, and following the Bobcats' clinching of the match, the remainder of the final match was completed indoors. With the win, the Bobcats (1-0) hand the Huskies (3-1) their first loss of the season.
Mikkelson and Kwei defeated Jai Yoon and Dave Adams at No. 1 doubles, 8-4. The Bobcats then secured the doubles point when Feldman and Dillon Kraus (Bayside, N.Y.) edged Wei Lin and Matt Burns, 8-6, at No. 3.
John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.) sprinted to a 6-2, 6-2, win against Joe Goldstein at No. 2 singles, before Kwei beat Adams, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 to give the Bobcats a 3-0 advantage. Mikkelson clinched the match, coming from behind to earn a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, win against Yoon at No. 1. Mikkelson's win completed unfinished business between Mikkelson and Yoon. The Bobcats' junior was forced to retire due to injury in the third-set tie-breaker of his prior meeting with Yoon, just three days ago in the Quinnipiac Invitational Flight A Quarterfinals.
With the match in hand, Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.) outlasted Tom Cook, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, at No. 4, while Feldman defeated Ricardo Cardona in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5. The Huskies salvaged a point as Lin defeated Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.) in an abbreviated third-set tiebreaker, 10-5, on the Quinnipiac Indoor Tennis Courts.
Three Bobcats return to action Thursday and Friday at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships. Kwei will play in Thursday's qualifying action, while Mikkelson and Hughes commence play in the main draw on Friday at Dartmouth.
