HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University freshmen men's tennis player Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.) has been named the Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, the league office today announced. Weeden advanced to the semifinals of the Connecticut State Championships in both singles and doubles this past weekend.
Weeden beat a player each from UConn and Fairfield, before his most impressive win against teammate Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) in the quarterfinals. He then fell to Yale's Erik Blumenkranz, 7-6, 6-2, in the semifinals.
Weeden also made it to the doubles semifinals with teammate John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.). The duo defeated Sacred Heart's Kirill Kasyanov and Nick Mazzarese, 8-4, in the Round of 16, before an 8-6 quarterfinal victory against UConn's Jai Yoon and Dave Adams. Weeden and Hughes then fell to Yale's Blumenkranz and Daniel Hoffman, 8-1. The Yale duo went on to win the doubles championship and the teammates played each other for the singles title, as well.
This past weekend's play concluded the fall portion of the Bobcats' schedule. The Quinnipiac men's tennis team returns to the court Feb. 20, when it plays host to Villanova.
