Men's Tennis Sweeps Holy Cross Behind Four Freshmen In Singles Line-up

HAMDEN, Conn. - John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.), Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.) and James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) all earned double wins as the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team defeated Holy Cross, 7-0, Sunday afternoon on the Quinnipiac Indoor Tennis Courts. Four freshmen started in the singles line-up for Quinnipiac. All four were victorious, with Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) and Justin Gerstl (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) picking up their first career dual-match singles wins. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 3-0 on the season, while Holy Cross falls to 2-6.

Hughes and Weeden paired to win their No. 2 doubles match, 8-1, over Dan Phelan and Tim Regan, before Hughes defeated Matt Wierzel, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Meanwhile, Weeden defeated John Burke, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2.

Kwei paired with Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) to win at No. 1 doubles, before beating Phelan, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles.

Freshman Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.) defeated Regan, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 4 singles, while Nelson was victorious over Das, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5. Gerstl completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-2, decision over Shekar.

Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.) paired with Dillon Kraus (Bayside, N.Y.) to take an 8-2 victory to round out doubles play over Ajeya Shekar and Scot Brownell.

The Bobcats return to action March 24, when they travel to Villanova. Matches are set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
