Men's Tennis Edged By Sacred Heart, 4-3
HAMDEN, Conn. - Seniors John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.) and Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.) and sophomore Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.) each earned singles victories, but the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team was defeated by intrastate Northeast Conference foe Sacred Heart, 4-3, Sunday afternoon on the Quinnipiac Outdoor Tennis Courts. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 7-3 (2-2 NEC), while the Pioneers improve to 14-6 (4-0 NEC).
Hughes defeated Chris Ujkic, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, while Lane took care of Nick Mazzarese, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4. Feldman earned a 6-1, 6-7, 10-6, victory over Michael Syer at No. 5.
The Bobcats dropped all three doubles flights in tight decisions as the Pioneers took the doubles point. Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) and James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) were defeated by Adam Gart and Syer at No. 1. Ujkic and Cole Conrad defeated Hughes and Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.), 8-5, at No. 2, while Feldman and Dillon Kraus (Bayside, N.Y.) fell to Kirill Kasyanov and Mazzarese, 9-7.
Kasyanov defeated Mikkelson at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3, while Weeden fell to Gart at No. 3, 6-2, 7-5. Chadd Sullo rounded out the Pioneers' singles wins with a 6-3, 6-2, victory over Kraus.
The Bobcats wrap up the regular season Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Stony Brook. Matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Stony Brook, N.Y.
