Morgenstern Advances To QU Invitational Flight C Singles Semifinals

HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University men's tennis freshman Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) won a pair of matches to advance to the Quinnipiac Invitational Flight C Singles Semifinals Saturday. Bobcats Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.), Brett Francis (Glastonbury, Conn.), Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.), Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) and Ben Shapiro (Katonah, N.Y.) also won one match each on the day.

Morgenstern defeated UConn's Ricardo Cardona, 7-5, 6-1, in the first round before getting past Villanova's Andrew Adler, 6-4, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. He'll face Fairfield's Erik Kremheller in tomorrow's semifinals.

Mikkelson defeated Hartford's Aneil Bhalla, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round of Flight A, before falling to UConn's Andrew Marcus, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6, in the quarterfinals.

Francis beat Hartford's Joel de los Santos, 6-2, 6-1, in the Flight B first round, before falling to UConn's Ryan Carr, 6-2, 6-2.

Nelson defeated Luccas Coutinho of St. Peter's, 6-4, 6-2, in the Flight C opening round, before being edged by Fairfield's Bjorn Merinder, 5-7, 6-1, 12-10, in the quarterfinals.

Lazerowich defeated Hartford's Eric Floum, 6-3, 6-1, in the Flight C opening round, before falling to Fairfield's Kremheller, 6-0, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

After falling to Fairfield's Reece Breault, 7-6, 6-1, in the opening round of Flight D, Shapiro defeated Hartford's Filip Miletic, 8-1, in the consolation bracket.

Quinnipiac Invitational singles semifinal and championship matches will commence at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
