WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) earned a double win, but the third-seeded Quinnipiac University men's tennis team was defeated by top-seeded Sacred Heart, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at the Mercer County Tennis Center. With the loss, the Bobcats end their season at 8-13 (3-4 NEC), while the Pioneers (16-7, 8-2 NEC) move on to the NCAA Tournament.
Kwei paired with Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.) to defeat Mike Syer and Chris Ujkic, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles, but the Pioneers won the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Kirill Kasyanov and Chadd Sullo defeated Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.) and Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.), 8-5, at No. 1, while Cole Conrad and Nick Mazzarese earned an 8-4 victory at No. 3 against Dillon Kraus (Bayside, N.Y.) and Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.).
Kwei picked up the Bobcats' lone point with a 6-4, 6-3, victory at No. 3 singles against Mazzarese. Sacred Heart earned singles victories at Nos. 1, 5 and 6 to clinch the championship. Sullo defeated Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) at No. 5, 6-3, 6-4, before Conrad wrapped up a 7-5, 6-0, victory against Morgenstern at No. 6. Kasyanov clinched the match, defeating Weeden, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1.
The remaining two matches were highly competitive when they were halted, with Mikkelson leading Ujkic at No. 2, 6-4, 5-4, and Lazerowich battling Syer at No. 4, 4-6, 5-1.
