HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, Mass.) and freshman John Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) fared well in singles' play for the men's tennis team, but the Bobcats were defeated by UConn, 5-2, on the Quinnipiac Outdoor Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon.
The Huskies took all three matches in doubles' play to open the contest. Junior Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.) and Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) narrowly defeated UConn's Jai Yoon and Teddy Margules, but dropped an 8-6 decision in the middle match. Senior James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) and Lazerowich fell, 8-5, in the No. 1 slot and Petrini and sophomore Micah Bailey (Miami, Fla.) were defeated, 8-2, in the third pairing.
Petrini captured the first win of the afternoon in his singles' match against Ryan Carr. Petrini outlasted Carr, 10-8, in the tie-break for the triumph. Lazerowich also won his match, knocking off Peter Surovic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
The Bobcats return to action on Friday, October 28 with the opening day of the Connecticut State Championships. The tournament will take place in the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on the campus of Yale University, with all the action beginning at 9 a.m.
