NEW HAVEN, Conn. – On the final day of the Connecticut State Championships, the men's tennis team won three of the four consolation brackets at the at Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. Freshman John Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) captured a Consolation Singles' victory, while a pair of twosomes swept through the Consolation Doubles' Tournament.
Petrini advanced to the championship after a disqualification in the semifinals and met Ricardo Cardona of UConn. Petrini outlasted Cardona in a tie-break, 6-2, 4-6 (10-6), to win the bracket. In other action, sophomore Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) defeated fellow teammate Alex Lazerowich (Strathem, N.H.), 6-2, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals. Morgenstern fell in the next match, 6-2, 6-0, as he faced off against a member of UConn's squad. After a win on Saturday, freshman Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) dropped his quarterfinals match-up to UConn's Jacob Spreyer, 7-6, 7-6.
In doubles' consolation play, Petrini and Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) defeated a duo from Yale, 8-3, for the top-bracket triumph. Two Bobcats also fared well in the bottom bracket, as James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) and Lazerowich knocked off a pair from UConn, 8-6, in the finals.
The men's tennis team will enjoy some time off before their next competition. On January 29, 2012, the Bobcats travel into New Haven, Conn. for a match against Yale. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
