ORLANDO, Fla. – Junior Andrew Weeden's (Martinsville, N.J.) win in No. 1 singles proved to be the difference on Thursday night, as the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team edged Bucknell University, 4-3, at Sanlando Park in Orlando, Fla. With the match all-square at three apiece, Weeden outlasted Gregg Cohenca for the triumph in the last match of the Bobcats' 2012 Spring Break Trip.
After dropping the first set, 1-6, Weeden battled back to win the second set, 7-6 (6) and force a decisive third set. Weeden took care of business in the final frame, prevailing, 6-3, for the point. In other singles' action, Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.) defeated Octavio Canibe, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 3 and Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) topped Kyle Rosen, 6-3, 6-4, in No. 5.
Earlier in the match, the Bobcats captured convincing wins in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles' play to earn the point. James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) and Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.) defeated Canibe and Scott Bernstein, 8-1, in No. 2, while Ambrosio and Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) downed Rosen and Gregory Maxon, also with an 8-1 decision.
With the win, Quinnipiac inched closer to the .500 mark, improving to 3-5 on the season. The Bison, who will take on Chicago State on Friday, descended to 3-7 with the loss.
The Bobcats return to the court next week Thursday with a home match against Boston University. First serve is set for 3 p.m. at the QU Tennis Courts.
