WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team has claimed the #2 seed in the upcoming Northeast Conference Championships this weekend, a single-elimination tournament that is set to begin on Friday, April 20 at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J. In search for their fifth NEC title, the Bobcats will square off against #7 Robert Morris in the Quarterfinals on Friday morning at 11:30 a.m.
The Bobcats enter the tournament with an overall record of 7-10 and a 3-2 mark within the NEC. The Bobcats endured a demanding 2012 non-conference schedule, but managed to string together four straight wins down the final stretch. No. 1 doubles tandem junior Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.) and senior James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) have played very well together, since Kwei returned to the court after being sidelined with an injury.
In singles competition, two freshmen and a sophomore have spearheaded the Bobcats. Sophomore Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) and freshman Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) have collected 13 wins apiece, with freshman John Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) chiming in with 11 in his rookie campaign. Weeden and Kwei have combined for 17 wins in the No. 1 and No. 1 flights, respectively.
Under the direction of Ira Miller, the FDU men finished the regular season with a 12-7 overall record and perfect 4-0 mark against NEC opposition. Over the last two weeks, the Knights defeated both Quinnipiac and Monmouth - seeded second and third, respectively - along with defending champion Sacred Heart. FDU last claimed the NEC title in in 2008 and has captured a league record ten championships since winning the program's first crown back in 1988.
