WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Sophomore Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) clinched an opening round victory for the #2 Quinnipiac University men's tennis team on Friday afternoon, as the Bobcats defeated #7 Robert Morris, 4-2, in the Quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference Championships. With the win, Quinnipiac advances to the semifinals to take on #3 Monmouth University tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m.
The Bobcats, now 8-10 overall on the season, took the first point of the match in the doubles segment. Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.) and James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) defeated Angus Thompson and Tarun Kishan, 8-3, in No. 1 and Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) and Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, Mass.) solidified the point with an 8-3 triumph over Igor Neves and Aaron Haas in No. 3. Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.) and Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) were also leading in the No. 2 flight, but didn't finish the match because the Bobcats had already been awarded the point.
The Bobcats continued to roll in singles competition, earning three wins to conclude the match. Kwei defeated Thompson, 6-2, 6-4, in No. 2, Ambrosio defeated Ricardo Horlle, 6-1, 7-5, in No. 5, and Morgenstern put the nail in the coffin with a thrilling triumph in No. 4. Morgenstern outlasted Kishan in a second-set tie-break, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).
The Bobcats edged Monmouth earlier in the season with a 4-3 victory on the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts. With a win in the semifinals, the Bobcats will take on the winner of Fairleigh Dickinson and Sacred Heart/Mount St. Mary's.
