FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's tennis team went 12-6 at the Fairfield Doubles Tournament this past weekend. Three of the four Bobcat tandems advanced to their respective flights' semifinals, while two of those three moved onto the finals. At last year's event, two teams moved to the semifinals, with neither advancing.
"We had a very solid showing at the Fairfield Doubles Tournament this weekend with two teams in the finals in their respective flights," head coach Mike Quitko said.
In the A2 Flight, James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) and Alexander Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.) defeated teams from Hartford (8-4), Sacred Heart (8-6) and Fairfield (8-3) to advance to the semifinals. Against the University of Connecticut's doubles team, Kwei and Lazerowich were victorious, 8-3, to move on to the finals. Fairfield's doubles team of Ian Tesmond and Joe Michalisin proved to be too much for Kwei and Lazerowich, who lost 8-2.
Micah Bailey (Miami, Fla.) and J.C. Petrini (Stanford, Conn.) moved onto the C2 Flight's finals. Bailey and Petrini defeated Hartford, 8-5; Sacred Heart, 8-5; and Fairfield, 8-3. In the semifinals, the Bobcats' duo downed Queens College's Andre Pellegrino and Matt Burns, 8-4, before losing to Diego Medrano and Jesse Smith, also from Queens, 8-4.
Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) and Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) teamed in the B2 Flight to defeat doubles' teams from Hartford (8-2) and Fairfield (8-7) before losing to UConn, 8-5. With a second place finish in their flight, Nelson and Morgenstern advanced to their flight's semifinals where they lost to UConn again, 8-5.
Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J) went 1-2 in the A2 Flight, with both losses coming on tiebreakers. They won their first match, 8-2, against UConn before back-to-back tie-breaker losses to Fairfield and Queens, 8-7. The two moved onto a consolation match where they defeated Hartford, 8-6.
The Bobcats are back in action when they play in the UConn Invitational on Sept. 23-25.
