2012-13 Season Underway; Men's Tennis Excels In Day One Of Stony Brook Invitational

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team opened fall competition on Friday morning, as the Bobcats joined six other schools at the Stony Brook Invitational in Stony Brook, N.Y. Senior Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.) and freshman Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina) fared well in Flight A Doubles, advancing to the semifinals to take place tomorrow morning. Barbero also marched on into the semifinals of Flight B Singles, defeating opponents from Stevens Institute of Technology and Army.

In Flight A Doubles action, Lane and Barbero topped Chris Rosensteel and Benjamin Foran (Stevens), 8-3, and followed with an 8-5 victory over a twosome from Concordia to advance to the semifinals. Lane and Barbero will take on Doug Caplan and Kyle Wolstencroft of Bowdoin College tomorrow morning.

Also picking up a victory in doubles was the senior duo of Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, Mass.) and transfer Fahoum Fahoum (Haifa, Israel). Lazerowich and Fahoum defeated Mons Kudtzon and Rick Timmerman of Stony Brook, 8-3, before falling to Army in the second round.

Barbero carried his momentum into singles competition, advancing to the Flight C semifinals with two impressive victories. In his first action as a Bobcat, the Argentinian defeated Tyler Tisdale (Stevens), 8-2, and then knocked off Army's Roman Cacha in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. He will look for a finals appearance with a win over Luka Trinka of Bowdoin tomorrow morning.

Also still alive in singles (Flight D) is senior Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) and freshman Alain Grullon (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic). Nelson won his first round match-up against Hamilton's Steve Rosenman, 8-5, and will face Andreas Lindell of Concordia tomorrow morning. Grullon cruised past Jacob Thigpen (Stevens), 8-1, and will take on Harrison McCormack of Army in day two.

Freshman Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.), sophomore Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Fahoum advanced to the second round in their respective flights, but fell short in the quarterfinals.  

Day two of the Stony Brook Invitational begins tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
