HAMDEN, Conn. – The Bobcats men's tennis team will host the  annual Quinnipiac University Invitational this weekend, a three-day event set to begin on Friday, October 5, 2012 at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Mount Carmel Campus. Joining the Bobcats on the courts this year will be Hofstra, UConn, Sacred Heart, Bryant, Villanova, Hartford and Bentley.

"We are once again really looking forward to hosting this event," said head coach Mike Quitko. "This year's competition features a good mix regional talent, including our first ever Division II school in Bentley. This will be a good test for our guys."

In their most recent outing, the men's tennis team garnered four titles on Sunday, September 30, as the Bobcats dominated the singles portion of the UConn Invitational up in Storrs at the Connecticut Tennis Courts. Sophomore Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina), senior Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.), sophomore John Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) and senior Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.) each won their respective flights in the tournament.

"Our guys really stepped up," said head coach Mike Quitko. "To win four out of five flights really says a lot about the talent on our team this year. We have a very motivated group who aim to get better and better every time they step out onto the court."

In the most exciting match of the tournament, Barbero outlasted Hartford's Jordan Badenko in a third-set tie-breaker after falling behind early. The Argentinian battled back from a 0-6 loss in the first set, taking the second set 6-4 and the tie-break, 17-15, in thrilling fashion.

In each of the other three wins, Quinnipiac swept its opponents in straight sets. Lane defeated UConn's Wayne Harrell, 7-5, 6-0; Lazerowich topped UConn's Joshua Palmer, 6-4, 6-4; and Petrini defeated Boston University's Brandon Phan, 6-2, 6-1 for the fourth and final victory.

The Quinnipiac Invitational begins at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Competition resumes the following day, Saturday, October 6, and then wraps up on Sunday, October 7. Play for the weekend begins at 9 a.m. on both days.
